What was once 35,000 acres of open land, known as Schroeder Manatee Ranch (SMR) in 1905, is now recognized as the beautiful master-planned community of Lakewood Ranch (LWR). Members of the infamous Uihlein family from Milwaukee, Wisconsin purchased the land in 1922 for cattle ranching, aggregate mining and tree and turf farming. Who are the Uihleins you may ask? If you are not familiar with the Uihlein family, you may know about Schlitz Brewery. The Uihlein family was one of the original owners of Schlitz.

SMR is still in the mix as the parent company to Lakewood Ranch. In 1994, SMR ventured into community development and with their guidance and support, Lakewood Ranch maintains its promise to protect the land and the people who live, work, and play here. There are now close to 43,000 residents of Lakewood Ranch. While the community is growing by leaps and bounds because of builders like Lennar, DR Horton, Kolter, Pulte, Taylor Morrison, Arthur Rustenburg, and the list goes on, SMR maintains the preservation of over 40% of the land for parks and conservation.

Lakewood Ranch Has Three Town Centers

Lakewood Ranch Main Street is the very first Town Center built since the Inception of the Lakewood Ranch Planned Community. Just off Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and University Parkway, you will find a charming and charismatic hub with everything you need including casual or upscale dining, fitness, beauty services, gas, grocery, specialty stores and entertainment.  First Fridays on Lakewood Main Street is an exciting monthly event that you must experience.  Whether you come with your family, friends or by yourself, trust me, there will be something special there just for you!

What Do You Have a Taste For?

Whether it’s Italian, French, Peruvian, Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Irish, or American, you will find these restaurants and more right here in Lakewood Ranch.  Not only will you find them here, but you will see why these restaurants are 4-5 star rated eateries.  The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great to dine and unwind al fresco.

The Green at Lakewood Ranch Is one of the newest Hubs located at the Northern Village of Lakewood Ranch. It sits on 37 acres of land sporting more than two dozen businesses, restaurants and lavish apartments. Healthy lifestyle is a clear offering of this town center.  If you are looking for a fresh and delicious salad or wrap or salivating for a healthy smoothie or Acai bowl, hit up 3Natives  or SoFresh.  Either place will certainly satisfy your palette.  My favorite is the avocado smoothie...yummy and healthy for your tummy, good! The Green is also part of CORE Mix-used Project -- a cutting edge life sciences research campus that focuses on brain health initiative.  A brain health innovation lab will be a space where global innovators, entrepreneurs and investors unite to evaluate and validate brain health solutions and innovations for commercialization purposes.

Waterside Place at Lakewood Ranch is located on the Southern border of Lakewood adjacent to Sarasota!  This Town Center is a place where something is created for everyone! Three Waterside villages are connected to Waterside Place by trail or water taxi.   “It’s an evolution in how we live, work and play on The Ranch, using the mixed-use concept that's gaining so much popularity throughout the country, but completely tailored to our culture and natural surroundings.” said Laura Cole, Senior Vice President of Lakewood Ranch Communities. Take a nice stroll on the pier, or travel by car or boat over to Waterside Place for shopping, dining, arts and entertainment.

Let’s not forget the Sport of Kings!

Sarasota Polo at Lakewood Ranch is a place where players come from all over the world to play.  These 130 acres of quintessential grounds is a place where Lakewood Ranch has held the most exhilarating polo matches for 28 years.  You can look forward to Polo season starting in December through April every year!
